1.Brief
After reading the brief, I understood that the project is for us to choose one direction from nine topics to conduct research and present it in the form of a film at the end.
After browsing through all the topics, I finally chose waste as my topic. I thought it was a large topic in scope, so I wanted to break it down into some small topics by doing a brainstorm.
2.Mind map
Through brainstorming, I have divided “waste” into a number of small directions. I was interested in the problem of ocean pollution caused by plastic waste. So in the end my research was directed towards the problem of ocean pollution caused by plastic waste.
3.Research content
To date, 9.1 billion plastics have been produced, generating 6.9 billion metric tonnes of plastic pollution. Of this, only 9% is recycled, 12% is incinerated and the remaining 79% (5.5 billion tonnes) ends up in landfills and in the natural environment. If we do nothing about the current disposal of plastic waste, then 13.2 billion tonnes of waste will pollute our environment.
So much plastic waste is being thrown into the ocean. So I started thinking about how does all this plastic get into the ocean and end up there.I think this will be something I hope to reflect in the film.
-How does plastic end up in our oceans?👇
– Summary of results👇
Tiny bits of plastic have seeped into soil, fish and air, posing a threat to animal and human health:👇
Then I started to think about what could we can do to help keep the oceans free from this plastic waste. This is what I will show in my design.
-How should we reduce the pollution of our oceans by plastic? What should we do? Some solutions👇👇👇
-Solution Summary👇
– My target group👇
These questions will be something I need to think about and challenge in this design. How can I make people feel the serious threat that plastic pollution poses to the ocean? How can I make people aware of the correct way to dispose of plastic products? And how can I get people to change their plastic habits? I will talk about these thins in my design ideas
4.Design Framework
5.Design idea
When I was doing my research, the first thing I felt when I looked at the shocking pictures of plastic pollution and the alarming statistics was that our oceans were suffocating. The sea is suffocating and the animals are suffocating because of some bad habits of using plastic products in our daily lives.
I thought that making people feel what the ocean is feeling would be the main direction of my design. The best way to change a person’s behavior is to make him feel the damage caused by his behavior.
So I wanted to use a metaphor, using human suffocation as a metaphor for the suffocation of the ocean to give the audience an immersive feeling of the burden of the ocean. Like this👇
At the same time I will record one person’s bad habit of using plastic in his daily life and use this person’s behaviour to reflect the behaviour of all humans, reminding us that it‘s human behaviour causing such a heavy burden on the ocean today and this is a man-made rather than a natural disaster.
I hope to use this footage to warn people to change their habits and dispose of plastic waste properly.
6.Story board
After making the first version of the storyboard, I made my first version of the video and sent my video to my friends who are not design majors to watch it and got feedback.
Through the feedback, I think that in the initial idea, I showed the presence of plastic waste in the ocean due to human actions. However, it did not give the impression that the ocean was suffocating. There was also no description of the harm being done to the animals. So I iterated on the design.
–Storyboard iteration👇👇👇
For the background music, I wanted to give audience the real feelings of being suffocated in the ocean, so I didn’t use any songs, but instead, i used recorded sounds of people breathing and the sound of bubbles from drowning. In addition, I also used the sound of the waves.
